Win puts Banbury close to top

BANBURY are in with a great chance of winning the Home Counties Premier League after a crucial win at Radlett.
Just five points separates the top five teams, with Banbury the last of these.

Their title challenge received a massive boost on Saturday, not only with the four-wicket win over Radlett, who had been top of the table before the game, but results elsewhere went their way.

Banbury had lost the reverse fixture, at White Post Road, earlier in the season and knew failing to win would be a big setback in their title challenge.

Again fielding first, Banbury’s bowlers put in an impressive display with all chipping in.

Former Hampshire player Damien Shirazi and Ed Smith grabbed three wickets apiece and Luke Ryan two as Banbury bowled out Radlett for just 162.

However, in reply, Banbury’s batsmen struggled. Chris Smith was out for just four, captain Benji Hector for 11 and Shirazi for 20.

Fortunately, though, Banbury had enough wickets in hand to complete the job.

After Craig Haupt managed 32, Luke Ryan again proved his value for Banbury with bat – at number seven – and ball as he steered his side to victory.

The win, coupled with draws for their rivals Tring Park, High Wycombe and Oxford, strengthend their position.

The state of play at the top of the league is now as follows:
Tring Park, top with 209 points
Radlett – 208
Oxford – 207
High Wycombe – 206
Banbury – 204
