The U17’s retained the county cup with a well earned 23 run victory against Great Tew at Horspath yesterday. After losing the toss we were asked to bat on a wet wicket but Lloyd Sabin and Jamie Coles got us off to a solid start and when Coles was out for 19 we had 50 on the board ,Charlie Hill joined Sabin and they took the score to 100 with 5 overs to go.Hill was out for 18 and a quickfire 17 from Josh Megson moved the total along.Sabin was finally out for a captains innings of 65 as we finished on a competitive 131 for 6 from 20 overs .In reply Tew got off to the worst possible start as Sabin brilliantly ran out Robbie Shurmer with a direct hit.But Tew got to 54 off 8 overs with Curtly Slatter going well.Enter Coles and Sabin whose 8 overs of controlled spin yielded only 30 runs as Banbury took control.Slatter was bowled by Sabin for 42 and when Sabin brilliantly caught Matt Taylor the game was up for Tew as they finished 23 short 8 wickets down as we deservedly retained the county cup.It was Banbury’s bowling and in particular their fielding that proved the difference and the master tactical move to take the pace off the ball by Sabin that proved crucial .We used 4 spinners in all who bowled 16 overs between them on a pace less wicket. Sabin who’s magnificent display earned him the man of the match award for the second year running .The wickets were shared around,3 for Justin Lambden,2 for Con Williams, one each for James’Captain’ Morgan,Lloyd Sabin and Jamie Coles in a very professional performance indeed.
