We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Brian Griffiths, aged 79.
Brian was a Banbury XX Club stalwart, joining the club in 1972 when his teaching career brought him to Banbury. An integral part of the club, holding many roles including President in 1999 and 2010.
Brian was also a club trustee, Chairman and Assistant Treasurer, a role he filled right up to his passing. He was also instrumental in amalgamating the cricket activities of both clubs, in 2012.
Brian was a highly talented batsman with a technique learnt playing on uncovered wickets for Crewe in the North Staffs & Cheshire League where he represented the league XI in 1965. Prior to his arrival in Banbury he played in Leicester and represented the County 2nd XI in school holidays.
Brian never made a fuss about records just went about the business of scoring runs quietly and efficiently with a great ability to build an innings. However he will be remembered for holding the record for highest score in Cherwell League 190no v Aylesbury in 1982; a record that was not surpassed for many years.
Proudly, Brian also played in the first ever inter league final, sponsored by Rothmans, in 1965 where his team mates included Gary Sobers & Wes Hall! Brian opened the batting for Leics 2nd XI with England player Barry Knight, and they put on a record 240 - Brian was very proud of his contribution of 19!!
Brian represented Oxon Over 50’s with distinction and when finished playing continued as assistant manager for many years. He was highly regarded in the cricketing world and will be remembered by those who had the pleasure of batting with him.
Our thoughts are with Brian's family, friends and all that knew him.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday 6 November - 12:00 at Crematorium Southam Road and with the wake at Ermont Way.
