Banbury Won in the 1st round of the Bernard Tollett Oxfordshire Knockout Cup on a chilly, gloomy Tuesday evening at Shipton-Under-Wychwood.
Despite the recent inclement weather, the West Oxon hosts provided a dry track that looked full of runs.
Banbury’s big hitting South African Opening Pair of Haupt and Hector looked set to capitalise on this as they made a lively start which saw the reigning Oxfordshire Champions race past 50 in the 6th over.
They were pegged back however, after Hector nicked a decent away swinger from Hussein to wicket Keeper Brain for 26. Some tidy bowling from Oxfordshire and Oxford UCCE star Dickon Morris saw Banbury’s Middle Order subdued and Haupt often starved of strike, the dangerous left hander eventually falling to Morris for 48 off 37 balls.
Steve Beck (26*) provided some late, and much needed, impetuous to the Banbury innings but the Premier league side closed on a below par 133 – 6 from their 20 overs.
Shipton’s ambitions were soon curtailed by a slick looking Banbury bowling unit. All the bowlers were accurate and the pressure was soon building on the Cherwell League underdogs. Steve Bates provided the only real threat crafting a well made 34 before chipping into the deep, leaving a lithe ‘Linford’ Haupt to skip through the boggy outfield and pouch a decent catch.
Eventually the Lords regulars floundered to 101 – 6 from their 20 overs, Jimmy Phillips returning Banbury’s best figures of 3 for 22 from his 5 overs.
