BANBURY did what they had to do at White Post Road, beating Welwyn Garden City to keep alive their title hopes.
With leaders Oxford losing at second-placed High Wycombe, Banbury knew they had to beat Welwyn in Saturday’s final home game in the Home Counites Premier League to take the division one title race into the final day.
Jimmy Phillips took 5-42 as Banbury dismissed the visitors for 171, with Ryan Newhook (2-39) and Nathan Hawkes (2-25) supporting well, while Jamie Hewitt (60) was the only Welwyn batsman to make an impression.
In reply, openers Chris Smith (38) and Simon Hole (34) gave Banbury a solid start with skipper Beni Hector adding an unbeaten 58 as they comfortably found the required runs.
Wycombe take over at the top,five points ahead of Banbury, and travel to Welwyn on the final day while Banbury visit Henley.
