Haupt hammers hundred to keep Banbury in hunt

FROM OXFORD MAIL:

Veteran opener Craig Haupt hit a hundred as Banbury beat hosts Potters Bar by four wickets in a thriller on Saturday.

The big left-hander stroked 16 boundaries in his run-a-ball century as the visitors kept up their pursuit of Henley at the top of Division 1.

Chasing the home side’s total of 201-6 off 60 overs in a rain-reduced game, Banbury got home off the last ball.

There were useful knocks from opening batsman Lloyd Sabin (34) and Jonny Cater (23), but Haupt was the mainstay of the Banbury innings.

He was eventually out 15 runs short of victory when he was caught off the bowling of Daniel Pascoe.

Earlier, Banbury had won the toss and put Potters Bar in to bat.

Openers Brady Barends and Ashley Blanchard both took early wickets to leave the hosts 20-2, but Tanweer Sikandar and keeper Harrison Palmer dug in to take Potters Bar to 105-2.

Spinner Jimmy Phillips, the hero with the ball last week, then bowled Sikandar for 52, and Palmer went not long afterwards, trapped in front by Luke Ryan for 40.

Daniel Pascoe and Patrick Scott took the home side to 175-4, before Pascoe (32) was stumped by Cater off the bowling of Richard West.

West then removed Lenny Cooper second ball, Nathan Hawkes claiming the catch, and he also took the wicket of Ben Taylor third ball to finish with figures of 3-20.

Scott’s 49 from 53 balls featured three sixes, but his side’s 201-8 from 60 overs never really looked like being enough with Haupt in such fine form.

Haupt and Sabin got Banbury off to an excellent start, but they wobbled after Sabin was out for 34 with the score on 57.

No 3 Ian Tew was caught off the bowling of Thilan Walallawita for just one, made from 18 balls, and Hawkes lasted just seven deliveries before he was caught and bowled by Pascoe.

Cater came to the crease and played positively, making 23 from 30 balls until he also fell victim to Pascoe with the score on 147.

Haupt and West put on 33 for the fifth wicket, and although they departed in quick succession to Pascoe, Ryan and Blanchard saw the Oxfordshire side home.
