The entry ‘caught Haupt bowled Radford’ is no stranger to Banbury scorecards. In fact the entry was scribbled so many times at the turn of the century that Keith Brighton would have been sensible to buy a stamp of the phrase!
It made a welcome return to the records on Saturday, but this time the Radford in question was Luke, Banbury’s new seam bowling star and son of former director of cricket Neal. It is testament to the nature of Banbury Cricket Club that there was also a Sabin grinning at first slip as the catch was pouched by Banbury’s big South African off the outside edge of Welwyn Garden City’s Matthew Hill. Lloyd has replaced his father at the top of the order and at first slip, though the chatter from this position is now less frequent and more sensible!
If the way Luke bowled in his first competitive spell for Banbury is anything to go by we have not seen the last ‘caught Haupt bowled Radford’ of the season, but recent evidence uncovered by Banbury Chairman Martin Phillips shows that this was a partnership that has been building for many years. A picture taken at least a decade ago shows that the relationship between the two goes a long way back… it is hard to say who has changed the most!
