Banbury 2nds were held to a winning draw on Saturday against local rivals Sandford St Martin 1st in the Cherwell league division two fixture. Sandford were relegated last season and were looking to gain promotion with a win over Banbury, which included three former Banbury players.
Banbury batted first on a good batting wicket and within 5 overs Banbury were 15 for 1 with Eddie Phillips being run out by Sandford captain Ian Johnson. Phillips was opening the batting for Banbury as Ian Tew went up into the first team. Banbury’s captain Ally Jarvis and the ever-reliable Andrew Sabin produced a second wicket partnership of 93. Ian Johnson bowled Ally Jarvis for 43 on his way of claiming 3 for 78 off 19 overs. Stu Armstrong and Sabin added 71, Armstrong hitting an entertaining 42. Andrew Sabin was run out nine short of his secondary consecutive century. Banbury has amassed a total of 225 for 5.
In reply Sandford got off to a steady with the score of 40 for 2 off 15 overs. Jimmy Phillips (playing for the seconds due to an exam in the morning) took both wickets. Once Rob Taylor was out for 39 bowled by Chris Board, Sandford didn’t attempt to achieve Banbury’s target. Patterson, in at number 4 was unbeaten on 19 after facing 130 balls. Ian Johnson and Richard Murray gave the Sanford total a boost with 27 and 22 not out respectively. Banbury chopped and changed bowlers trying to prize the batsman out but on a good batting wicket it was always going to be difficult. Sandford batted for 50 overs and we 125 for 5.
